Curious
She picked up her pen and began to write. He googled “Ashleigh and Steve wedding”. She joined a writing club. What? Why? Who? Where? When?
She’s eighty-ish now. A former teacher in a land far away. She never had kids of her own, but must feel a connection to the many that passed through her classroom. Life’s winds have scattered them, reunions bring some back. She has time on her hands now. She picked up her pen and began to write. Uncertain she’ll be remembered, she begins. Is it you? What happened to you? Wasn’t there a brother? Do you remember staying with us once?
He’s brash. He’s from the east. They’re different there. The signal is clear; change is coming. Tempest in a teapot. The ambitious jostle for position. The weak scurry for cover. The arrogant are surprised with packages. A year later he remains a source of intrigue. An accountant from the third floor has a scoop. He googled “Ashleigh and Steve wedding”. Did you see? The opulence!
“Get a hobby”, was the advice offered during one of their bi-weekly calls. It seemed a daunting a challenge. She signed up for a music appreciation class for adults. She joined a writing club.
The letter was a welcome surprise. How it found her is a mystery with a lucky twist. What a delight to be remembered. What an indulgence to share a glimpse of 30 years’ worth of events. Questions and answers are exchanged through email. An engineer, not a doctor? Assumptions shattered. Tell me more. Travel is no longer in the cards for her, but the adventures continue.
They met at a “fine-dining Sushi and Sake restaurant”. They have a son. His daughters were bridesmaids. A foreign world with mysterious references bolded Ki, Ines Di Santo, Anne Anderson Events. The pictures (by Ikonica) are stunning. The man who abhors complacency for his organization is on display. And the ambitious, weak, and even complacent are at attention. His radical finance ways are now supplemented with whispered salaciousness.
The yoga class ended. The music class continues. Her first writing assignment is underway. She’s wrestled with the topic, wrestled with the deadline. She tells herself it’s more a reading club with a writing price of admission. She looks forward to the other entries. She’s found a hobby. Is she more fulfilled? More at peace? Time will tell.
